Hat on a Hat: Beer City Bung Hammers 2019

We finish Whitecaps Week with the team’s new version of their fan favorite alter ego from the 2018 season. The ‘Caps crushed it last season with the Bung Hammers and may have just out done themselves in 2019.

Logo Quality: 9/10

Bung Hammers is a great name. Like “Udder Tuggers,” it seems dirty on its face but has a legit story behind it. Last year everyone outside the beer world had no idea what a bung was or the hammer that hits it into the bung hole. This logo tells the story for you. Gets away from the baseball but I ain’t mad at it.

Colors: 9/10

The white panel, the tri-colors, the bright and expressive logo….damn near perfect. Not a huge orange fan but it fits the theme. But that’s literally the only reason it isn’t a 10/10 in my eyes.

Creativity: 9/10

I loved last year’s logo and this one is even better. PLUS, the colors and tri-color design push it to the next level in creativity. The Bung Hammers dipped their toe in the water last year and jumped full in with a cannonball this year.

Wearability: 5/5

You can wear this anywhere at anytime with almost anything. Forward or back, it will be a nice look and a conversation piece.

Overall: 32/35

As disappointing as the Calaveras hat was, this hat TOTALLY redeems the Whitecaps. I bought a Bung Hammers hat as soon as possible last year and may just have to get the updated version this year. This is great. A MUST BUY.

Hat on a Hat: West Michigan Calaveras

We continue our bounceback week focused on West Michigan and today we dip back into the Copa de la Diversion set with the Whitecaps offering, the West Michigan Calaveras.

COPA_CALAVERAS_5950_F_500COPA_CALAVERAS_5950_3QL_500

Logo Quality: 5/10

It looks fine but as I will explain below, I don’t really get it.

Colors: 7/10

Best part about the hat. Sticks wth the theme and really stands out. Good summer hat. Fun and eye catching.

Creativity: 4/10

I don’t get it. Most of the Copa de la Diversion hats seem to have a local tie or a hispanic twist on the normal team name. Calaveras means “skulls.” So, like they are white and the cap to the brain so they are Whitecaps? Even then, the waves under the skull make it look like a ghost, which confuses even more.

Wearability: 3/5

Doesn’t go with much because the colors are so loud but it’s not offensive. Looks sharp and unique.

Overall: 19/35

When MILB announced the Copa de la Diversion, I saw a few from a bunch of teams and LOVED them and the concept. I quickly searched for the Whitecaps’ version and was pretty disappointed. DIdn’t seem as fun and creative as others. Not West Michigan’s best offering but hey, they have crushed it elsewhere.

Hat on a Hat: West Michigan Whitecaps

Well, it has been a while since we have updated the blog but we are back and refreshed. As we look to get back into the groove, we are going to come back home and hit the West Michigan Whitecaps for three posts this week. First up will be the standard home caps.

home-cap-front_500home-cap-side_500

Logo Quality: 6/10

It’s a standard logo. Gets the idea across and is clean. You’d probably think the team was named the “Waves” or something like that if you came to it new and you wouldn’t be far off. But how else would you do a “Whitecaps” logo.

Colors: 5/10

Nothing special. They are clean and inoffensive. They are what they are and they work.

Creativity: 7/10

Like I said, how else would you portray a whitecap? The baseball is a bit random in the middle but at least you know the sport. The eyes make it menacing. They did good.

Wearability: 4/5

You can wear this anywhere. It’s a standard hat. Wear it anywhere with anything. I wear my old one to cut the grass. You won’t stand out but you won’t offend either.

Overall: 22/35

It’s a good hat. The score compared to others right now will make it look worse but that’s because we are still early, as more hats come in, more will fall below it. The Whitecaps hat is a winner, just not elite.

Hat on a Hat: Wisconsin Brats

The Udder Tuggers hat release shocked me so much and caught my eye, I figured we’d finish out the Timber Rattler offerings this week. Wisconsin is known for a few things, beer, dairy and brats. Brewers already handle most of the beer swag, so it’s up to the Timber Rattlers (already a dope name) to pay homage to the rest of the state’s offerings.

Brats-Fitted-Front-side_500BratHat_Fitted1_500

Logo Quality: 6/10

It’s well made, just not much to it. The mustard is a nice touch, the sauerkraut(?) looks like cheese or hashed browns. Looks delicious and worth a chuckle but not overly attractive.

Colors: 5/10

Green and brown mustard? Okay. I think I prefer the all-green 2018 version more than the two panel 2019 version but not by much. Dirty Packer colors.

Creativity: 6/10

As I have said before, I am a sucker for food and drink related logos and identities. ThisGreenBratmanHat_500 one is fun, I like brats. But that’s all this is. A brat on a bun. They do have another Brats logo available on FlexFit hats, but I only deal with fitted on here (7 3/4 if anybody is offering) so it doesn’t count but may be a better logo.

Wearability: 2/5

I like the effort but just could not see myself wearing it unless at a game, in Wisconsin or at a German festival. That’s only like 30 incidences a year for me, not enough action.

Overall: 19/35

The score looks worse because it is so much lower than the others so far BUT of course as we start this venture, we are going to start with greats. This fun idea will fall more in line with others as we go.

Hat on a Hat: Wisconsin Udder Tuggers

Our first emergency Hat on a Hat. This one is worth it. It took my breath away as I saw the release for the first time. We have a new leader.

The Midwest League is quickly becoming a gem for creative logos and its becoming a competition, one I can get behind. The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers are already a sick name with great logos ( more on them later this week) but this is the masterpiece. To the ratings….

UDDER TUGGERS

Logo Quality: 9/10

Look at that beaut. Brandiose is the team behind a lot of these crazy new logos and brands and this is one of their best. It’s ridiculous yet clean. Complex and easy to understand. It is menacing and will raise questions. That’s what we want.

Colors: 10/10

I’m a sucker for the dark blue. Dark blue and white are as clean as a style combo looks, as bad as I hate Penn State, that scheme is perfect. The 10 rating comes with the bill. The cow print is obnoxious but fitting. Not only for the cow motif but also, you are wearing a logo for a team called the Udder Tuggers, we are going for obnoxious.

Creativity: 10/10

A lot of great names and identities have come from the recent phase in minor league baseball but the Bung Hammers set a mark last year to clear and this one jumps right over like cow jumping over the moon. Going as the Wisconsin Cows would be easy. Use the same logo and you’d win but the “Udder Tiggers” makes this a completely different ball game. Team should be called up to AA just for the idea.

Wearability: 4/5

It is pretty and perfect. The only knock is how outrageous it is. Not for everyone. But for those in the hat collecting game and looking to get the hottest thing out there, this is it.

Overall: 33/35

We have a new King of the Mountain and it looks like a heifer in need of a milkin’. The Udder Tuggers took over the social media world today and will continue to sell these beauties for the forseeable future. Exactly what you want from a novelty identity. Bravo.

Trubisky Tries, Fails to Beat Stafford in Beer Chug

Okay, yes, it is great to see Aaron Rodgers fail at something compared to his biggest rivals. It’s fun to see him fail at something so American as a beer chug. Mitch Trubisky KILLED him.

But let’s not forget, Matthew Stafford still beat Trubisky WHILE DRINKING MORE BEER. That fact seems to be forgotten tonight.

Stafford is once getting overlooked. Just like when he threw for 5,000 yards and 41 TDs in 2011 and didn’t make the Pro Bowl. Look at this disrespect all over Twitter.

But, that’s why it is Detroit vs. Everybody, today and always.

Hat on a Hat: Louisville Murcielagos

Louisville is the first time the Hat on a Hat series has left the state of Michigan and it is also the first time we have hit the same franchise multiple times, especially in the same week. We highlighted the Mashers and the Mint Juleps earlier this week and now we shift to their choice for the Copa de la Diversion series, the Louisville Murcielagos.

Copa_5950_OnField_500

Logo Quality: 7/10

It’s impressive to portray a bat without any sort of wings in the logo. You may not see it as a bat right away but your will soon. The Aztec/Mayan style is engaging and catches the eye. The only drop in score is from the initial confusion but once you know its a bat, you can’t see it as anything else.

Colors: 8/10

I love this. Red gold and black are clean and versatile Could have been easy to just throw the gold logo on an all black hat but the Copa de la Diversion series has a lot of color. Louisville could have went that direction but they go more subtle, but the red pops enough.

Creativity: 7/10

It is simple but perfect. They are celebrating hispanic heritage so what is your team name translated into Spanish? They luck out because a simple name like “Bats” easily shifts to a badass name like “Murcielagos.” Sounds great but the idea was right there for the taking. Just a bummer it’s not the Lamborghini.

Wearability: 5/5

Great design and color scheme makes it fit with any kind of wardrobe. You can wear this everyday or when you want people to notice. It’s fun.

Overall: 27/35

At first, people may think you are wearing something from Legends of the Hidden Temple but in the end, this is a very clean hat and logo with a cool history and backstory. Wear with pride.

Rodgers Can’t Finish Half A Beer, Stafford Smokes His Overrated Ass

During the Bucks-Raptors game Thursday night, the Jumbotron cameras found Packers lineman David Bakhtiari who went on to straight chug beers at an impressive rate. They then turned to Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers sitting courtside (very far away from any teammates like Bakhtiari) and Rodgers can’t even finish the half beer he has, let alone quickly.

If that wasn’t embarrassing enough, it was noticed by the best QB in the NFC North, Kelly Stafford caught her husband’s response to the Rodgers struggle.

Hat on a Hat: Derby City Mint Juleps

Louisville knows how to market themselves. They have some great alternate logos available so I’m going to hit them three times this week. First we did the Louisville Mashers and now we turn to the Derby City Mint Juleps.

Mint_Juleps_Cap_Pink_500Mint_Juleps_Cap_Green_500

Logo Quality: 8/10

Awesome. You instantly know what it is and it catches the eye. A bit busy and cartoonish to be a perfect score but a winner nonetheless. Never had a mint julep but this makes me thirsty for one.

Colors: 8/10

Again Louisville offers two color sets for their alternate identities and these are much more bold than the Mashers. I personally would go with the green and blue but the pink and gold is even something that seems feminine but I’d wear. Pastels and bold colors are all the rage at the Kentucky Derby. Perfectly appropriate.

Creativity: 8/10

On Monday we looked at the first step in the bourbon lifespan with the Mashers. Now we are later in the timeline with the premiere Louisville cocktail, the Mint Julep. The colors fit the pageantry and again, I love an alcohol themed nickname.

Wearability: 4/5

You are looking to make a statement and catch eyes if you are wearing a hat with this logo so the colors help that. They just make it rough to wear everyday.

Overall: 29/35

We have a new #2. The Mint Juleps jump the Locos for the second highest rated hat in the rankings. This hat is a beaut, a unique, fun logo that you know you aren’t going to be seeing being worn by everybody else. You stand out with this set up without being obnoxious.

Hat on a Hat: Louisville Mashers

For the first time in Hat on a Hat history, we are stepping out of Michigan. I had seen the Louisville Bats, alternative logo the “Louisville Mashers” and though it would be a great one to head to next. Then I saw their Copa de la Diversion hat and that is dope. And they have another alternate identity and THAT is sweet. I may have to do all three this week. Hell, even their standard cap is clean.

But first we start with the Mashers.

Louisville-Mashers-Caps_5950_BLUERED_500

Louisville-Mashers-Caps_5950_GRAYBLACK_500

Logo Quality: 7/10

I like the name and I like the logo. They are in Kentucky, you mash in for bourbon. Kentucky does well with bourbon. Get it? Well this has the corn bag, the barrel and a bat…all used to mash in different ways. It catches the eye and gets the job done.

Colors: 7/10

They offer two colors for caps but I really like the blue and the red. Really makes it pop and stand out. Don’t know what the colors have to do with the team or bourbon but I like it.

Creativity: 8/10

I am a sucker for a food or drink inspired logo/name. Especially alcoholic. I love me some bourbon and the Mashers play off that well as the bourbon capital and make this logo an eye catcher, an ice breaker and a conversation starter. It’s fun, it’s fitting, it works.

Wearability: 4/5

The black and grey work well with anything but the blue and red are a great hat for the summer months. Who doesn’t have blue and red to go with the hat as you hit the beach or a bar?

Overall: 26/35

An overall great cap. Great logo and a fitting style for the local crowd. A winner and we will see if this is even the best hat the team offers in their store. Stay tuned.
